Best Foot Forward: free her!

free all of the girls and women in this movie from the grip of the patriarchy. good god. not a particularly funny movie either, despite its efforts. the "boogie woogie" number (pictured) was a highlight, as featured in "That's Entertainment" (1993). nancy walker's character keeps getting in digs about how ugly she thinks she is, which is kind of killing me, because she was kind of one of my gay awakenings. also they put her in a dress that's less...everything...than the other girls, and yet it has the opposite effect intended. it makes her stand out, and of course it doesn't hurt that the dress is imo, much cuter than the "pretty" dresses.

the movie also suffers from too many characters and a plot that is thin and contrived. it improves a little in the back half, but i'm gonna have to go with:

Summer Stock: can everyone fuck right the way out of Judy Garland's personal life?

all of the IMDB reviews & the wikipedia article can't stop harping on how ohhh judy garland gained weight ohhh she's not as svelte as she used to be. SHUT THE FUCK UP!!

anyway. the musical itself is like. ok.

6/10. judy's singing is flawless as ever, gene's dancing is great, plot and characters are barely-there.
